About Polymer Clay and Art Dolls
Polymer Clay
What is polymer clay? It is a man made clay that
fires at low temperatures and can be cured in
a home oven unlike traditional clays which have
to be fired at very high temperatures which require
a kiln. You can sculpt it, carve it, sand it,
paint it, and basically use it in a myriad of
ways. Artists are using it to make sculptures,
beads, jewelry, kaleidoscopes, and much more.
It comes in nearly every color of the rainbow
and can be mixed to make new colors the same way
you can mix paint. It is shatter and chip resistant,
and although it can be broken, it is much more
durable than ceramics. These synthetic clays have
been around for a number of years, but the clay
that is available on the market today is much
stronger and easier to work with than what was
around years ago when I first started using it.
Although some purists still sneer at polymer
clays as a legitimate medium, it is only a matter
of time before it becomes widely accepted. However,
art is not what things are made of, but how they
are made.
Art Dolls
What are art dolls? Art dolls are not meant to
be played with unlike most toy dolls. They are
meant to be positioned and displayed as a work
of art, rather than used by a child. Most often
art dolls are not safe for children anyway since
there are often many small objects that can easily
harm a child. They are not mass produced like
most toys, they are unique and individual so each
creation has a life of it's own and generally
portray a snap shot of time be they historical,
mythological or modern.
My dolls center around fantasy and mythological
creatures and not human likeness', therefore,
they don't always stick to some kind of proportion
formula. However, they are meant to capture some
human like emotion and personality. I like them
to be similar to the personalities of people I
have known in the past, with idiosyncrasies and
dichotomies within their character. If I get one
person to say "Man that is just like me!"
then I have done my job well.
