Commissions

Comissions isn't a term I particularly like. It suggests that you pay me in advance, or make a downpayment on a piece of art you would like to have made specifically for you. I won't accept either. The reason I won't accept money in advance is because I am terrible about doing things once I've already been paid for them. It makes me incredibly stressed out, and I simply end up rushing the job when I feel like I have procrastinated too long, and end up creating a very inferior piece of work.

I also can't or won't do deadlines, so if you need a piece by next thursday for your uncle Ned's birthday party, don't even bother to ask. That also stresses me out beyond belief, so I end up doing the same thing I do when I have been paid in advance, and produce something that is highly inferior in quality and creativity, because my heart simply isn't in it.

This causes several problems when it comes to accepting commissions, because if someone doesn't put a downpayment or deposit on the future work, there is no guarantee that I will get paid for doing it. It also causes a problem because most commissions, they are buyer specific. The commissioner (you) want the commissionee (me) to make something that would be of interest to you but probably no one else. So I end up with possibly something that I am stuck with because you don't like it, and I can't sell because no one else would be interested in it.

So what to do? Well... here is my compromise.

If you want me to create something for you, I will agree to it IF the following apply.

1. It is something that would be marketable in other venues.
2. It is general, in that I am allowed to use my own artistic vision to create it.
3. You are willing to be given the first shot at buying it, but if you aren't interested in it, I am then free to try selling in somewhere else.

So in other words, I won't create a doll that looks like your uncle Ned, I won't do anything that is personalized with Uncle Ned's name on it, and I won't do anything that I have no interest in creating.

I will however, make a dragon claw backscratcher in purple, or make a gemstone tree spirit with your birthstone, or I will make a doll that is in a particular setting (possibly). Once it is done, I will contact you, and show you the photos of it, and you will be given the opportunity to buy it within a reasonable amount of time. If you don't wish to buy it because it isn't up to your expectations, or you have better things to do with your money, then you aren't locked into some contract, and haven't lost any deposit money.

A win, win situation no? I don't get stressed out and make something I don't want to make, you don't get upset because you paid for something that you don't want or that doesn't live up to your expectations. On the other hand, you may get something that you really may not have thought about, but looks rather cool, and I get to use my own creativity, enjoy what I am creating.

So....still interested in getting me to do something for you? If so, click on Contact at the bottom of this page and let me know what you have in mind.
